Step through the doors of St Augustine’s Church – the Wee Church on the Walls – and discover a story that reaches back to the earliest days of Christianity in this city.

Standing in the heart of Derry/Londonderry, beside the historic City Walls, St Augustine’s occupies a site traditionally associated with St Columba (Colmcille) and the monastery he founded here in AD 546.

For almost fifteen centuries, this hillside has been connected with Christian faith, worship and community. Churches have risen, disappeared and been rebuilt; the city around them has changed beyond recognition; generations have lived through times of peace, conflict and transformation. Yet the Christian story of this special place has continued.

The present St Augustine’s Church, consecrated in 1872, carries that remarkable heritage into the modern day. Within its walls are beautiful stained-glass windows, memorials and features that tell the stories of the people who worshipped here, served their community and helped shape the life of the city.

But St Augustine’s is more than a historic building.

It remains a living place of worship and a welcoming Christian community, continuing a tradition of faith on this site that stretches from the age of St Columba to the present day.
